In his earlier days, he provided humanitarian aid with the Hopi on the 3 mesas. He later tested Hopi corn in South Africa due to its resistance to heat and ability to grow with minimal water.

He recevied his nickname “Smoki”. In the earlier days as a jeep guide, notorius for handing out nick names, he received the name because he resembled a famous bear when wearing his hat.
